Tulips: meaning and symbolism

While not the fanciest flower in the garden, the beauty and grace of a simple tulip means that the flower has become a symbol for meanings such as:

- Perfect and lasting love between partners or family members

- Eternal passionate love, if passion is rejected or returned

- Royalty and a royal nature

- Forgotten or neglected love

- 11th wedding anniversary

- Abundance, prosperity and indulgence

- Charity and support for the less fortunate

Etymological meaning of the tulip flower

The name Tulip is short and to the point, but comes with a long and complicated history behind it. Currently, etymologists attribute it to the Persian word for turban, delband. However, this is probably due to a bad translation rather than an actual link, as Persian citizens loved to wear tulips in their turbans and the Ottoman empire's writings about the flower were translated into Turkish, Latin and French before arriving at the name we now know. All common tulips belong to the genus Tulipa, but some variations are called neo-tulip because they have grown wild for so many generations that they have developed different characteristics.

The symbolism of the tulip flower

The tulip is a classic flower of love, although it was considered more of a symbol of charity by the Victorians. The Turkish people who originally created the flower considered it a symbol of paradise on earth, making it part of many religious and secular poems and pieces of art.

While the Ottoman empire planted the bulbs to remind them of heaven and eternal life, the Dutch who popularised the flower considered it a reminder of how brief life can be. The connection to love and passion developed mainly in the 20th and 21st centuries, but that doesn't diminish the strength of the symbolism behind this flower.

Because of its spiritual meaning, the tulip refers to love and the lightness of the soul. In this way, it shows that your spirit is going through a moment of calm.

Spiritually, they are flowers that can open space for a series of positive questions about your soul. With that, contact with the tulip can open the door to quality feelings in your life.

Besides love, generosity and kindness can also be part of the way tulips present themselves to the world. The power of tulips, thus, can generate good things for your spirit.
